Amazon launched its Luna video game streaming service for the general public on Tuesday in the United States, aiming to expand its multi-pronged empire into the booming gaming industry.

Amazon is making some games available free to members of its Prime service, and weaving in features from Twitch game-play and commentary broadcasting platform, according to the release.

Game software is hosted at datacenters and streamed for play on an array of devices including computers and many smartphones «without lengthy downloads or updates, expensive hardware, or complicated configuration,» according to Amazon.

Microsoft is considered the streaming video game heavyweight with its Xbox Game Pass service and large community of players using its consoles and desktop computers.

Microsoft catapulted itself into the big league in one of the world’s most lucrative markets early this year by announcing a $69 billion deal to take over video game maker Activision Blizzard — the biggest acquisition in the sector’s history.

The deal will bring some of the world’s most famous games into Microsoft’s possession, including «Call of Duty», «Candy Crush» and «Warcraft», and make it the third-largest gaming company in the world, behind only Sony and Tencent.

Pushing cloud gaming along with mobile platforms and gaining a bigger foothold in Asia are all part of Microsoft’s thinking, according to Niko Partners, which specializes in the gaming sector in Asia.

Sony PlayStation has suspended operations in Russia over its invasion of Ukraine

PlayStation and Nintendo are suspending shipments to Russia, the Japanese gaming giants said Thursday, as international brands increasingly halt operations in the country following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Sony Group, which owns PlayStation, said in a statement that its video game unit «joins the global community in calling for peace in Ukraine».

«We have suspended all software and hardware shipments, the launch of Gran Turismo 7, and operations of the PlayStation Store in Russia,» it said.

The tech and entertainment conglomerate also said it was donating $2 million to the UN refugee agency and Save the Children «to support the victims of this tragedy».

A growing number of multinationals, from McDonald’s to Adidas and Slot Gacor Samsung, have fully or partially halted business in Russia after the invasion of its neighbour.

Some have cited supply chain disruption while others have directly linked the move to outrage over President Vladimir Putin’s decision to send troops to Ukraine.

A Nintendo spokesman told AFP that the Kyoto-based company behind the popular Switch console is suspending shipments of all goods to Russia «for the time being», without giving details on the start date or likely end of the move.

«There are two reasons. One is that our e-shop (in Russia) has been under maintenance since March 4, because the payment provider stopped ruble transactions. Another is logistics disruption,» the spokesman said.
