Police kick Muslim activist off American Airlines flight

A Muslim activist was removed from an American Airlines flight and detained for four hours after she reportedly confronted a first class passenger over alleged special treatment.

The incident happened on Saturday when Amani al-Khatahtbeh, a congressional candidate and founder of Muslimgirl.com, attempted to travel from Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey to Charlotte, North Carolina.

According to a statement from American Airlines, the incident between Al-Khatahtbeh and an unidentified white passenger began during TSA screening.

American Airlines indicated that her arrest came after the on-plane confrontation, but her brother and the New Jersey chapter of the Council for American-Islamic Relations said al-Khatahtbeh was handcuffed for refusing to remove her hijab.

‘Our understanding is that Ms. Al-Khatahtbeh believed the other passenger, who is enrolled in PreCheck, was getting favorable treatment because he was allowed to proceed through security while she was removing her shoes,’ the statement read.

Al-Khatahtbeh, who was named one of the 25 most influential Muslim Americans by CNN, is the founder of the blog MuslimGirl.com

‘This led to a verbal altercation that continued through the terminal and on the plane where Ms. Al-Khatahtbeh confronted the passenger and began filming him before taking her seat,’ the statement continued.

American Airlines added that both PreCheck and non-PreCheck screeming were consolidated into one open lane at the time.

Al-Khatahtbeh later shared her experience on Twitter. She said the man had her removed from the flight because she made him feel ‘uncomfortable’.

‘I had the craziest experience in TSA this morning. An entitled white man behind me insisted on cutting me in line because I was ‘still taking my shoes off.’ When I said he could wait like everyone else, he started going off about how he’s ‘pre check’ and ‘first class», she told her 28,000 followers.

‘He then proceeded to not only shove his things before mine, but then RUN THROUGH THE MACHINE and TSA did NOTHING! Not only did they not do anything, a TSA officer had the audacity to tell ME to ‘cut it out».

‘Y’all know if I, a VEILED MUSLIM WOMAN, had the audacity to throw a temper tantrum and run through TSA security, I would have gotten BODIED. I would have been detained, missed my flight, possibly gotten charged, etc.’

Later al-Khatahtbeh updated her followers on the unfolding situation by tweeting: ‘Guys he made a complaint about me and @American is attempting to remove me from the flight.’

She then tweeted the airline directly stating: ‘ONE OF YOUR MANAGERS IS TRYING TO GET POLICE TO REMOVE ME OFF 9:55 EWR (newark nj to nyc Liberty Airport) TO CHARLOTTE.’

Al-Khatahtbeh shared a photo of her being arrested by police and captioned it: 'Simply flying as a Muslim woman makes people uncomfortable...unbelievable'

On Facebook Live, she posted a video showing all passengers disembarking the plane after she and the man both refused to leave.

Her brother later shared an update on Twitter saying that he was en route to Newark Liberty to try and find further information.

He and CAIR-NJ executive director Selaedin Maksut both claimed that Al-Khatahtbeh was only handcuffed after she refused to remove her hijab.

Selaedin Maksut, executive director of New Jersey chapter of the Council for American-Islamic Relations, said Al-Khatahtbeh was handcuffed after she refused to remove her Hijab

‘@Amani2020 was handcuffed by EWR police officers bc she refused to take her hijab off during processing. Muslim woman should not have to endure such humiliation bc they hold firm to their religious beliefs. Do better,’ wrote Maskut.

‘Only after our @CAIRNJ attorney asked to speak with EWR Port Authority police did they remove the handcuffs and allow for @Amani202 to remain in the cell with her hijab.’

Additional footage of the incident was taken and shared by an American Airline passenger who witnessed it.

The passenger also shared video footage of al-Khatahtbeh speaking with airline crew and police before she was booted off the aircraft.

Coaches Hynes, Nasreddine meet as Predators face Devils

A nearly decade-long partnership between John Hynes and Alain Nasreddine ended in unceremonious fashion Dec.3, when the New Jersey Devils fired Hynes as head coach and elevated Nasreddine, his assistant, to the position.

Who could have imagined it would take Hynes and Nasreddine just 58 days to meet up again, this time on opposite ends of the ice?

An unlikely reunion will take place Thursday night, when Nasreddine’s Devils host the Nashville Predators and their recently named head coach — Hynes — in an interconference matchup in newark nj to nyc, N.J.

The Devils were off Wednesday after returning from the All-Star break Tuesday night with a 4-3 shootout win over the host Ottawa Senators. The Predators will be looking to sweep a back-to-back road set after edging the Washington Capitals, 5-4, on Wednesday night.

Hynes will be hoping his first impression of the new decade Prudential Center is better than the last one he endured as the Devils’ head coach.

In his penultimate game as head coach on Nov.30, the Devils allowed two short-handed goals in a span of fewer than three minutes in the third period of a 4-0 loss to the New York Rangers.

Two days later, the Devils traveled to upstate New York and absorbed a 7-1 rout at the hands of the Buffalo Sabres.Ray Shero fired Hynes the next afternoon, hours before New Jersey hosted the Vegas Golden Knights.

Shero, Hynes and Nasreddine had worked together since 2010, when Shero, then the general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins, hired Hynes and Nasreddine to serve as the head coach and assistant coach with the Penguins’ American Hockey League affiliate. And Shero hired the men for the same positions upon being named the Devils’ general manager following the 2014-15 season.

Shero was fired Jan. 20 — 13 days after Hynes was hired to replace the recently dismissed Peter Laviolette as the Predators’ head coach.Hynes said Wednesday he had no hard feelings towards his former boss.

«I worked with Ray for 11 years and it’s just part of the business, unfortunately,» Hynes told The Bergen Record prior to Wednesday’s game. «I’ve talked to him since he was relieved of his duties, and we’re all good.»

Both Hynes and Nasreddine said their relationship hasn’t been impacted by the midseason switch in roles. The two got together for lunch in New Jersey during the All-Star break and regularly talk on the phone and trade text messages.

«It was great to get in touch with him, share some thoughts,» Nasreddine told NJ Advanced Media on Wednesday. «He offered all the help that he could offer. I’m extremely grateful and obviously it goes both ways.»

Nasreddine, who is 9-11-3 as the Devils’ interim head coach, said he hopes to approach Thursday night’s matchup «as just another game.» But Hynes, who is 4-4-0 since taking over the Predators, acknowledged feeling a bit of unease heading back to New Jersey.

«I’ve never experienced that,» Hynes said.»I haven’t been back there since everything went down.

«I’m not sure what to expect.»

Storm Orlena has left four dead, shut down coronavirus vaccination sites, canceled more than 2,000 flights and led to over 660 vehicle crashes in New Jersey alone as it battered the East Coast on Monday

Storm Orlena has left four dead, shut down coronavirus vaccination sites, canceled more than 2,000 flights and led to over 660 vehicle crashes in New Jersey alone as it battered the East Coast on Monday.

As the storm continues into Tuesday, officials warn the heaviest of the snow accumulation is still to come in some places, with two feet predicted in total.

On Monday night, 20 inches or more had already fallen from eastern Pennsylvania to northern New Jersey. The highest total of 30 inches was reported in Mendham, New Jersey, at 11 pm.

The first victim of the winter freeze was named on Monday evening as a 67-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s disease who reportedly wandered away from her home in Pennsylvania.

And three further deaths, also in Pennsylvania, were announced by authorities on Monday night in a murder-suicide linked to dispute between neighbors over snow shoveling.

With flakes falling since Sunday evening, the National Weather Service said more than 15.3 of snow had fallen in Manhattan’s Central Park as of 5 pm, making it the first snowstorm to dump a foot or more of snow on the city in just over five years.

Video posted to social media also showed the battle against coastal flooding in New Jersey just after high tide late Monday morning near Atlantic City, Belmar, Manasquan, and Wildwood.

Although the heaviest parts of the storm had moved through the metropolitan area by Monday evening, lighter snow showers were expected to continue virtually all-day Tuesday.

Parts of New England also braced for a foot or more by the time the snow finally tapers off in the northernmost states by Wednesday evening, the weather service said.

Rates of up to 2 inches per hour are possible in localized areas, particularly in Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire.

In northeastern Pennsylvania, a shooting stemming from an argument between neighbors over snow disposal during Monday’s storm left three people dead.

Luzerne County District Attorney Stefanie Salavantis said a husband and wife were shot to death in the street outside their Plains Township home just before 9 a.m.Monday.

The suspect was found dead in his home of a self-inflicted wound. The county coroner pronounced all three dead just before 11:30 a.m, according to .

Salavantis said the preliminary investigation indicates that there was an ongoing dispute but ‘this morning, the dispute was exacerbated by a disagreement over snow disposal.’

Chief Dale Binker of the township police department, however, said police had no record of the neighbors fighting, but there may have been a previous dispute that also concerned ‘placement of snow in somebody’s yard.’

James Goy, 50, and Lisa Goy, 48, argued with Jeffrey Spaide, 47, who lived across the street, and Spaide went into his house, came out with a handgun and fired at the couple until the weapon was empty, Binker said.

He then went inside, came out with an AR-15-type rifle, and fired twice more at each victim with that weapon, he said.

Arriving officers tried to aid the couple, and they were knocking on the suspect’s door to arrest him when they heard a single shot, finding him dead after they entered, Binker said.A total of 15 to 20 shots were fired, he said.

The Goys had a 15-year-old son with autism who is now staying with his grandparents, Binker said.
