Python — How to get path of a directory or a file and not the full absolute path
I currently have a python script on a windows machine and I want to make it platform independent. It has to be able to accept from a user the path of a directory and the path of a file and be able to work with it.
I know how to work with absolute paths — for example:
c:\program files\…\blahblah\app.exe
But I am getting mixed results with relative paths.
I am trying to access files like so:
data = os.path.join(‘C:\\Users\\USERNAME\\Desktop\’, str(sys.argv[1]))
and I am getting nothing.
Any suggestions?

If you have a filename which is relative, you can use os.path.join to get its path relative to the current working directory (and os.getcwd() to get the current working directory):
import os
path = os.path.join(‘foo’, ‘bar’)
If you have a filename which is absolute, use os.path.abspath():
>>> os.path.abspath(‘c:\\bar\\foo’)
‘c:\\bar\\foo’
