UI/UX
All software submitted will be reviewed based on UI/UX. As with any app, the first thing people notice is the user-interface and how easy it is to use the app. There’s a massive trend in mobile devices right now of providing wrappers over applications rather than just a regular button to launch an application. Whilst users expect smooth experiences, the question is: should they?
Simulation apps require as much of the viewport to be covered with something useful. A game like SimCity requires a big playing area but the interface needs to be classy and easy to use, which necessarily means that fewer game screen. However, apps can often cover more screen real-estate by throwing lots of interfaces on screen at once and being tricky to use. This can be done in a stylish and humorous way that makes you start playing.
Extra Points
Simulation apps usually have menus that are too extensive and cluttered in titles, effects, and so on. This makes the app more confusing and difficult to use. It will be difficult to score the app for the user flow because it’s hard for developers to plan flow in these apps.
However, for some games the menus give the app a feature that makes it easier to understand and use. Examples include Xbox’s ‘Pinning’ game features (XP and EP), PS4’s ‘Search’ text feature, or Steam Workshop in each game for which you can use and search for content.
It’s also important to give the user time to decide what to do next and to educate them rather than force. Simulation game players often have a lot to remember because they are tackling numerous different aspects of the same game at once and even if you have a great UI/UX you will still struggle with players.
