…Notre Dame of the South – The Mission
While a visitor to Los Gatos, California he once mentioned to my Sister, Sister that he’d always wanted to go to South Central Los Angeles to experience the problems that are central to the community.
She suggested that he try visiting the local church. He agreed, and found that the vision and reality of the Church’s outreach in the area was truly stunning.
The church she referenced, the Notre Dame of the South, is a local Catholic church in the heart of Los Gatos, California. In a sense, its’ name is more accurate than Sister’s; Los Gatos translates to “Saint Genevieve’s hills,” and “the South” is of course where the borders of Los Gatos, Palo Alto, and San Jose define the limits of city and suburb. The parish is named after Notre Dame de Sévigné, a French abbess who was both renowned for her virtuous life and for her letters to her sister, St. Genevieve. On the statue in the church’s entrance, she’s often credited as the founder of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Sévigné.
The history of this church is as fascinating as its’ location in the heart of the East Bay. When the parish began in 1942, the site was a mortuary for just a few hundred people. The small chapel was rebuilt in 1947 and has since grown into a beautiful Catholic church. In 2010, the parish’s building received two great gifts: a large stained glass window from a congregation in Los Angeles who had previously been a part of the Notre Dame of the South, and a ten year, $8.5 million grant from the Heritage Foundation.
The congregation has grown to over 900 people, with 125 priests and 215 sisters, including many from the Order of Discalced Carmelites and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Sévigné.
The result of all of this growth is a beautiful church with plenty of room to grow.
A few years ago, however, my friend was informed that he would no longer be allowed to hold services in the main sanctuary. Instead, he was told that he needed to find an appropriately sized chapel to use.
I’m glad to report that he hasn’t stopped holding services in this venue yet. His congregation is still growing

What’s New In?
After a lot of testing and trying to mix programming and design, I have been able to make a simple Soundfont player which is still easy to use and it look great (if it’s only because of the Artwork 😉 ).
It is clear that we could do much more with this in the future. But for now, this is what I have done and I’m still in the process of getting the word out to the Music Production World.
The feedback I have gotten from the Sf2 community has been very good thus far. Hopefully this will let other musicians expand their sound design abilities.
I am working on a new version now, with more advance features, and I will be porting it to Mac and Linux next. If you enjoy this application please support me and let me know.
Why this program?
It was a purely personal thing, because I love sound design and would like to be able to reach the sounds I make. I have been waiting for a program that can store high fidelity soundfonts and easily customize it to suit my needs.
I have played along with other soundfonts programs, but there was always something lacking.
I also wanted a way of ensuring quality by providing feedback to the creator of a Soundfont I was using.
The program itself I designed for myself. I hope that it can save you some time and frustration. It is simple enough for a beginner, but advanced enough for even the most seasoned sound designers.
