Adobe Photoshop is a good introduction to graphic design, but it’s not the only game in town. This chapter describes similar programs that you can use to perform basic image edits on the Mac. In general, these programs do about the same thing as Photoshop, but the names and interface aren’t the same. Therefore, some of the terms I use in this chapter can make sense only if you’ve mastered Photoshop.
I’m assuming that you’re fairly comfortable using a computer mouse and keyboard. Of course, you can always edit an image on your keyboard by using a program such as iMovie and using the editing commands available in the program’s GUI, but I’m highlighting the tools that are all readily available if you can edit an image with a mouse.
Elements and Pixelmator Pro
Elements and Pixelmator Pro are two new programs that are designed to provide the features Photoshop offers for Mac OS X 10.5.5 or 10.6 and later. Both of these programs allow you to achieve the same things as Photoshop.
Both applications provide layer-based editing where you can manipulate every pixel on an image. You can also combine the effects of more than one layer. You can easily move, delete, copy, or duplicate layers.
Adobe Photoshop CS5 features a customizable workspace, a large toolbox of editing tools, sophisticated precision tools, and the ability to work with other images and video as layers. These tools make a huge difference when you’re editing an image (as I explain in the later sections «Perfecting images» and «Creating graphics with Adobe Photoshop» respectively).
No other software can even come close to the features and precision of Photoshop CS5.

Elements 8
Elements 8 is a free program from the same company that brought you Elements. It has many of the same features as Elements (such as layers and a workspace) and provides the same capabilities as Photoshop.
It also has tools that are not available in Elements. These features include the ability to easily resize and manipulate vector images. Vector images are used for logos, text, and even 3-D graphics. Because it can edit vectors, you can easily create swatches, artworks, and patterns. I also like that you can edit and convert patterns

Thunderbirds and Mammoth Fun for Kids is a family-friendly event at Long Beach City College, presenting an opportunity for local kids to take part in a fun afternoon outdoors.

I’m not sure if you’re talking about replacing the launch image or changing the iOS UIKit background.
To change the iOS launch image (the image which appears before the SpringBoard is loaded) you need to set the app’s «Launch Images» property under «General Tab» to the name of the file you want to appear at launch.
You can find the iOS launch image settings in the «Info.plist» file.
On iPhone the following field is «Launch Screen File», on iPad the following field is «Launch Screen File (iOS)».
