Photoshop Elements, by the way, is almost identical to the full-featured version of Photoshop. In a healthy dose of irony, Photoshop is also the name of the computer application that enables you to generate raster images. Unlike vector-image editing programs that use special formats, raster image-generation programs like Photoshop take the raw-pixel data and rearrange it into patterns called pixels. A digital camera takes thousands of images per second; Photoshop can assemble them into the photo you see after you’ve captured that moment in your camera’s viewfinder. In some ways, Photoshop is a kind of reverse image editor. It turns raster images into vector images by cutting out parts of pixels.
In this chapter, we’re going to look at how Photoshop is a fundamentally different image-editing tool from the other image-editing programs that I discuss in Chapter 8. Photoshop’s layers and its «push» and «pull» functions enable you to create your own image makeovers and even Photoshop doodles in between shots. In addition, you’ll find that Photoshop is the best tool for applying specialized effects and retouching images.
Mastering Photoshop
Photoshop can be intimidating to a beginning image editor, but it certainly doesn’t have to be. It takes a little practice to get used to the different tools that make up a typical Photoshop image-editing project, and we’ll be reviewing the basic elements of working with Photoshop layers and photo manipulations throughout this chapter.

Creating images is one of the most common use cases of Photoshop Elements. It’s straightforward to use, and you can do just about anything you would do in Photoshop. There’s a Filter gallery that you can use to apply different effects to images (see the next section).
When you import an image, it’s set as the active layer. You can create new layers or replace existing layers by clicking the layers tool (at the bottom of the left sidebar) and dragging one of the existing layers into the part of the page that needs them.
You can add text anywhere on a layer by clicking and dragging the text tool into the image. You can select the font by clicking it on the toolbar, or by dragging the font in the Format panel into the image.
The text tool allows you to move the text within the image or to move it to a new position on the page. To create text at a specific location, you can use the Move tool (top of the left toolbar). You can also create a new layer and just add a Text tool into it.

Middletown Tech Students Design Wind Turbine

Purdue University, the Purdue Applied Research Laboratory, and Middletown Technologies, Inc. will host a team from the University of Miskolc, Hungary, led by Dr. Enikő Verebélyi, this summer to design, develop, and test an innovative wind turbine designed to save on costs and maximize energy output.
Approximately 100 students from the University of Miskolc, including a six-member high school team, will spend three weeks with Purdue experts in Middletown, where the team will install turbines on campus and work with Purdue faculty and students to collect data on wind speed, a key parameter in wind turbine design.
Wind turbines – two with vertical axis and a third with horizontal axis – will be installed on the roofs of the South and North Physical Plant Buildings during the week of April 22.
A major focus of the project will be to collect data on how well the turbine performs in varying wind conditions at Purdue’s Arnold Engineering Development Complex in West Lafayette. A wind tunnel will be used to test the turbine’s efficiency and performance under different wind speeds and directions, as well as resistance to adverse weather conditions.
“A turbine is an effective means of tapping into the power of the wind and it would be easy to think that wind turbines are expensive,” said Katie Ann Nelson, senior project manager for the university’s Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates, or SURGE, program.
“But what people do not realize is that in a year, wind turbines produce more energy than a coal plant.”
Middletown Technologies, a supplier of renewable energy-related products and services, is providing the wind turbines for the project.
“The wind turbine we are supplying is the lowest-cost turbine on the market,” said Dave Howe, an engineer at Middletown who is overseeing the project with Purdue’s Daniel Waggoner, professor of mechanical engineering in the School of Engineering.
“It also includes several cost-saving features, making it ideal for SURGE.”
