The KTAudioHealer VSt plugin makes the incoming audio healthier by applying DC / LF blocking, Nyquist / HF blocking and undenormalization. It is designed to be used with a compressor (such as the AKAI S900 or the ROLAND SVP) for the purpose of limiting (limiting has the same purpose but it uses input signals) and noise reduction.
For the purpose of limiting, setting the threshold value of the compressor in relation to the gain will give the desired output. If you set the threshold to -3db you will get a gain that is -3db down from the input signal. This works very well if your compressor has a linear response because it will give you the same amount of gain reduction when processing a high-gain signal or a low-gain signal. However, a compressor with a logarithmic response (i.e. a compressor with a parabolic response curve) does not give the same amount of gain reduction when processing a high-gain signal or a low-gain signal. This is because a logarithmic response curve shows no reduction of gain in the first pass when processing a high-gain signal. In this case the KTAudioHealer VSt plugin will block the low and high frequencies to keep the incoming audio from getting damaged. The KTAudioHealer VSt Plugin also uses a Nyquist block filter to block the frequencies that are twice as high or twice as low as the frequencies in the input signal. The Nyquist block filter is necessary in order to get rid of the second-order noise that is caused by a side-band that is two times as high or as low as the frequencies in the input signal. This also causes the signal to oscillate and can make the signal distort or peak. By adding the Nyquist block filter, you can significantly reduce the distortion and peak levels that are caused by these side bands.
The KTAudioHealer VSt Plugin uses the Dynamic filter for denormalization. A Dynamic filter will process an incoming signal by using a linear (squared) model. By using this model, the filter will not process the signal from the extreme frequencies as much as it will process the signal from the normal frequencies. By limiting the incoming signal to certain frequencies, you can save some of the distortion and noise in the signal when it reaches the Dynamic filter. This is because it will process the incoming signal with a linear model that is more forgiving than a linear model that processes an incoming signal with the Dynamic filter. The KTAudioHealer VSt Plugin applies a noise floor that is set in relation to the minimum frequency of the incoming signal. If the incoming signal is at the bottom of the range of the incoming signal, the noise floor will be set in relation to the minimum frequency of the incoming signal.
