In the United States, AutoCAD is the leading commercial CAD product, according to a February 2016 report by the market research company IBISWorld. In the same report, the market research company (IBISWorld) reports that the worldwide market for AutoCAD grew by 24.7% in 2015, reaching $1.1 billion in sales, with some 80.5 million licenses in use worldwide as of 2015.

In the year 2000, I wrote a brief article for the Journal of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, which documented the history of computer graphics in the AutoCAD development process. The article was titled The Early AutoCAD Development Years, and it provided a brief look at some of the early development of the CAD software in the early 1980s. This article is reprinted below for interested readers.

In this report, I describe a brief history of AutoCAD’s development. I also briefly describe a number of contributing factors that led to the development of the first iteration of the program. It is also worth noting that the first version of AutoCAD was only 2.5 million lines of code (MLOC), but this version represented the first 2D CAD program.

John Loftus, a former software development contractor at Autodesk, recalls the need for a program that could produce graphics that were not just more advanced than what could be done in the 1980s, but also provided ways of representing graphics that were intuitive and more understandable to the user.

Loftus has been involved with a number of applications for a number of years, and in the 1980s, he worked on a number of different applications, including CadLab, a 2D CAD software product developed by Autodesk. Loftus was the principal designer of that software product, which was released in the early 1980s.

In a May 2015 article in the journal Applied Computer Graphics and Applications, Loftus described the problems that he faced in the development of that software product, along with the development of a new CAD product.

A number of issues were faced in the early days of Autodesk, Loftus recalled. For example, the writing of the source code had to be “chicken scratch,” he recalled. The programmers had to start with primitive operations and move to more sophisticated operations, with programs that could be used by the typical drafting person.

It’s been awhile since I published a new comic here at Storming the Studio, but now that the conference season is over, I can dig back into my backlog and share some things that I’ve been working on. The first is my take on Cimmerian, an Ars Magica game system I’m trying to write.

I’m going to go ahead and say that this is not my official Ars Magica conversion, but just another game that I’ve been itching to do for quite a while. It was a lot of fun to get back into writing, and the result is here, if you want to play it. But I thought I’d tell a bit more about what inspired me to do this.

The first inspiration came from the 2008 edition of Ars Magica, where Jirek Kupina used the Ars Magica engine to make an RPG called Cimmerian. At the time, Ars Magica was starting to get a decent amount of attention, and Cimmerian got some good press, too. I started thinking about how cool it would be to work with a toolset like that. If Cimmerian can make it, why can’t I?

The second inspiration came from a system I saw online that was from the same author as Cimmerian, Andreas Rönnqvist. He’s written a massive fantasy roleplaying game called Trigonius, and his system seemed to be a relatively straightforward evolution of Ars Magica. It turned out that it was just a computer-generated example of the system. I was a little disappointed, because I wanted to see how his system worked in practice, not just in theory. But he did mention a bunch of really great things about the system, and so I decided to take a look at what he was talking about.
