Backing up a computer system using the Windows Backup Tool is straightforward, as long as the system is connected to a network and has Internet access. It allows the creation of easy, unattended, daily, weekly, monthly or annual backups, taking advantage of your computer’s hard drive and solid state drives. As the name implies, it allows to create backups of files, folders, printers, drivers, apps, and Windows components.
In this tutorial we will learn how to create a backup using the Windows Backup Tool.
Windows Backup Tool Basics
To start a backup, open the Backup and Restore app in Windows 10. This is the same app that can be accessed by pressing the Windows key and R at the same time.
In the Backup and Restore, select the option named Back up your files, apps, and settings. Then choose the drive where you want to save the backup files and set the frequency of the backup as desired.
The Backup and Restore window will open and you will be presented with a list of backups that have been created using Windows Backup Tool.
Checking the status of a backup
The status of the backup is shown in the Backup and Restore window. It gives information about the current size of the backup, how many files were backed up, and information about any errors that might have occurred.
To see the backup status, click on the View button.
The backup file is also available in the Windows Backup folder, and any new backups will be created there.
Connecting to a network
When you are done backing up your files, it is time to connect the PC to a network so that you can download the backup.
A network connection is also required to upload the backup files to an external hard drive or to any other device.
To connect to the network, click on the Wi-Fi icon and then connect to the available Wi-Fi networks. When the Wi-Fi is connected, a small notification symbol should be displayed.
While you are in the process of creating a backup, this icon should turn green.
